Baking for business course funded

We are delighted to announce that Merton Priory Homes has awarded us funding for our baking for business course. This will be a 10 week course offering baking enthusiasts that chance to turn their passion into a business. Details of the venue and application process will be posted shortly.

TWEP awarded Evening Standard funding

The Women’s Empowerment Project  has been awarded a grant of £18,540 from the Evening Standard’s Dispossessed Fund, to help  mainly African mothers get onto training courses in childcare and catering.

Six achieve swimming success

Six women took part in The Women’s Empowerment Project Make a Move initiative and learnt to swim.   The free course, supported by the People’s Health Trust, taught participants how to swim a width unaided.    One participant said they were now looking forward to the summer holidays, and instead of watching their children and family in the water, they would be able to join them.

Leadership training course – applications invited

The Women’s Empowerment Project has launched its first leadership training for African women and African women activists in the UK.

The training will take place over three days and cover issues of personal empowerment and sector development.   With opportunities for participation the course will provide a chance for participants to learn from each other.

The venue will be in London – but is to be confirmed and will take place on 26-28 July.

Certificates of Attendance

At a Ceremony held on 19 April 2012, six of the eleven students who took part in the Community Empowerment Training,  received their Certificates of Attendance from The Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton, Councillor Gerry Jerome.

The Mayor greeted the students in The Mayor’s Parlour.  Kau Belleh, Chairlady of TWEP, briefly described the project and Cllr Jerome praised the students for their commitment to the project.

The event was attended by representatives from partner organisations, Sutton Council for Voluntary Services, Sutton Council, Sutton Racial Equalities Council and Coman Communications.

Sign-up for free swimming lessons

Twelve places are available on a FREE swimming course.   Starting on 11 April 2012 and running each Wednesday between 11am and 11.30am, this 12 week course will take place at Morden Park Pool.

This programme, which is part of TWEP’s Make a Move initiative,  is ideal for non-swimmers or those who are weak swimmers and want to improve.  Priority for places will be given to people who have been recommended exercise as part of  managing a medical condition.

Final week

This weekend will see the final day of the six week Community Empowerment Training.

On week 4, participants attended Facilitation and First Aid training provided by The U, in Sutton.  Last week Kau Belleh conducted a session on Fundraising and this weekend will cover Equalities and Diversity which will be followed by a period of evaluation and consideration of next steps.

Students will receive certificates of attendance on 19 April 2012, at a ceremony hosted by the Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton, Councillor Gerry Jerome.

Researching need

A further module on researching social need and consultation was delivered today by the Community Involvement and Innovations Manager at London Borough of Sutton.  The second week of the six week Community Empowerment Training programme included guidance on how to develop a survey.

First Community Empowerment Training Session

Saturday saw the start of  the TWEP Community Empowerment Training programme.

This six week course started with modules on public speaking and roles and responsibilities, delivered by Diana Coman, Coman Communications and Kau Belleh, Chairlady of TWEP.

“These modules offered by The Women’s Empowerment Project in partnership with other voluntary sector organisations, will really help develop skills, knowledge and the ability to contribute more to the community of Sutton,” said Cllr Simon Wales, Executive Member for Communities, Transport and the Voluntary Sector, Sutton Council.
